February 2016

Establishment of SGM Task Force

The LGBTQ+/Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGM) Task Force was formed to address issues facing SGM individuals at Stanford University School of Medicine. The task force identified ongoing activities for the LGBTQ+/SGM community at all constituency levels and brought in leading voices from these programs.

October 2016

Pilot of SGM Medical Student Course

A new course was piloted that introduced medical students to sexuality and gender health-related topics. The course is now an integral part of the medical school's ongoing core curriculum.

October 2017

SoM SGM Survey

In order to address the commitment to support and understand the needs for those who identify with a sexual or gender minority group (SGM or LGBTQ+) within the School of Medicine, medical students, graduate students, residents, postdoctoral trainees, fellows, faculty, and staff were invited to participate in a survey, developed by the School of Medicine Diversity Cabinet’s LGBTQ+/SGM Task Force.

January 2018

First Identity Pin Distributed

A pin made specifically to recognize and honor Stanford Medicine's LGBTQ+ community was made and officially distributed. The pin design has since been used as a logo for other School of Medicine LGBTQ+ efforts. The pin continues to be distributed at LGBTQ+-related events and trainings.

First SoM SGM Town Hall

Members of the Stanford Medicine LGBTQ+ community held a town hall to share their concerns and to strengthen their presence on campus. Attendees included constituents across the School of Medicine. Ideas for future LGBTQ+ campus initiatives were developed.

February 2018

Establishment of SGM Subcommittee

The LGBTQ+/Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGM) Subcommittee meets to discuss ongoing Stanford Medicine SGM efforts, such as medical education curriculum, healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community, and seminars, trainings, and workshops representing the latest research on the LGBTQ+ community. The subcommittee also spearheads new programs and events for the community, including the Stanford Medicine LGBTQ+ Forum.

June 2018

OUTlist/ALLYlist Redux

The +OUTlist is a resource supporting Stanford Medicine LGBTQ+ individuals in community-building, mentorship, and visibility. The OUTlist was revamped alongside a new partner page: the ALLYlist, to promote a more visible Stanford Medicine LGBTQ+ community.

SGM Identity Question in Medical School Admissions

A question about applicants' LGBTQ+ identity was added to medical school secondary applications. The question was included to better understand representation of and to support LGBTQ+ individuals within the medical student community.

First SGM Faculty Gathering

Sponsored by the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity in partnership with Leslee Subak, MD, Chair of OBGYN, and James Lock, MD, PhD, Associate Chair and Professor of Psychiatry and co-Chair of Stanford Medicine’s LGBTQ+/SGM Diversity Cabinet Subcommittee, this event aimed to provide networking opportunities and a precedent for community among LGBTQ+ faculty.

Inaugural LGBTQ+ Forum: Celebrating Visibility

The LGBTQ+ Forum featured personal and professional stories from LGBTQ+ members of the Stanford Medicine community, as well as networking opportunities and opportunities for allies to show support. This inaugural event promoted the continued growth of a visible Stanford Medicine LGBTQ+ community.

June 2019

Stanford Medicine marches in the SF PRIDE Parade

For the first time in over a decade, Stanford Medicine walked in the San Francisco PRIDE parade on June 30, 2019. All Stanford affiliates, along with their family and friends were welcome to join. Efforts were combined with Stanford's PRIDE organization to make this an all-inclusive, campus-wide event.

Second SGM Faculty Gathering

The second SGM Faculty Gathering was again sponsored by the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity in partnership with Leslee Subak, MD, Chair of OBGYN, and James Lock, MD, PhD, Associate Chair and Professor of Psychiatry and co-Chair of Stanford Medicine’s LGBTQ+ Diversity Cabinet Sub-Committee. This year's event provided networking opportunities and community connections for LGBTQ+ faculty and also expanded to senior hospital staff.

Second LGBTQ+ Forum: Connections

The second LGBTQ+ Forum was themed Connections. The Forum featured numerous speakers, including Mitchell Lunn and Juno Obedin-Maliver leading the PRIDE study, panelists from across Stanford Medicine constituency groups, and remarks from Dean Lloyd Minor of the School of Medicine, David Entwistle of Stanford Health Care, and Paul King of Lucile Packard Children's Health Stanford.

 

 

 

 

 

 

        

        

        

        

        

 

 

        

        

        

        

        

Ongoing Efforts

SGM Curriculum Enhancement

Faculty and instructors are continuously integrating sexuality and gender topics into the entire medical student curriculum. Currently, one sexuality session, one gender-based session, and one trans patient advanced clinical skills session have been fully implemented.

SGM CME Activities

Leading faculty are spearheading innovative Continuing Medical Education (CME) content for sexual and gender minorities (SGM) for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH) and Stanford Health Care (SHC). The CME curriculum is updated on an ongoing basis to incorporate the latest healthcare advances for the SGM community.
