Dr. Jamshid Ghajar Honored by Harvard Iranian Association
Dr. Jamshid Ghajar was honored by the Harvard College Iranian Association during the 2021 Iranian Gala, an event aimed at bringing together leading professionals, artists, and academics who have dedicated themselves to furthering the study, understanding, and appreciation of Iranian culture, history, and society.
Stanford Residents Honored with SFNS 2021 Young Investigator Awards
Stanford Residents Drs. Kevin Kumar and Michael Zhang received the San Francisco Neurological Society 2021 Young Investigator Awards. Dr. Kumar received the Edwin Boldrey Award intended to recognize a research project in neuroscience, and Dr. Zhang received the Child Neurology Award, given annually to the best clinical paper covering topics in child neurology. The Awards were presented at the SFNS 2021 Annual Meeting.
Stanford Resident Honored with SFNS 2020 Young Investigator Award
Stanford resident, Dr. Jennifer Quon, received the San Francisco Neurological Society's 2020 Young Investigator Award. Quon was honored with SFNS' Child Neurology Award for her paper "Automatic detection and classification of posterior fossa tumors on multi-institutional magnetic resonance imaging using deep learning."
Dr. Gary K. Steinberg Receives AANS/CNS Award
The AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Section awarded Dr. Gary Steinberg the 2020 Ralph G. Dacey, Jr. Medal for Outstanding Cerebrovascular Research, in recognition of his contributions to the basic, translational, and/or clinical understanding of cerebrovascular disease.
Stanford Resident Receives 2020 AANS Award
PGY-5 resident Dr. Zack Medress, received the Robert Florin, MD Resident Award from the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons for his project “Predicting Determinants of Variation in Episode-of-care Bundled Payments for Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery”. This work was presented virtually as a plenary session at the 2020 AANS meeting and was performed under the supervision of Stanford Neurosurgeon Dr. Anand Veeravagu.
Stanford Resident Receives 2019 CNS Award
PGY-5 resident Dr. Zack Medress, received the 2019 Samuel Hassenbusch Young Neurosurgeon Award. The award was presented to Dr. Medress at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons' annual meeting in San Francisco, for his abstract "Simulating Episode-Based Bundled Payments for Cranial Neurosurgical Procedures."
Stanford Neurosurgeons Recognized by National Spine Society
Stanford neurosurgeons, Dr. Corinna Zygourakis and Dr. Anand Veeravagu both made the North American Spine Society's SpineLine 2019 20-Under-40 List. The award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments, community service and philosophy of care of young spine surgeons.
Stanford Resident Wins WNS Clinical Science Award
The Western Neurosurgical Society awarded Dr. Arjun Pendharkar the 2019 Clinical Science Award for his abstract "Functional mapping for glioma surgery: A propensity-matched analysis of outcomes and cost" which he will present at this year's WNS meeting in November.
Stanford Resident Selected by CSNS a 2019-2020 Fellow
The Council of State Neurological Societies has selected PGY-5 resident, Dr. Eric Sussman, a 2019-2020 CSNS Socioeconomic Fellow. The Fellowship trains residents to gain competence in, and understanding on the full spectrum of socioeconomic issues impacting neurosurgery.
Stanford Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Selected a 2019 Beckman Young Investigator
Brad Zuchero, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, was selected a 2019 Beckman Young Investigator (BYI) by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. The BYI grant provides research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of their academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Dr. Zuchero's award will support his research project "Elucidating new roles of myelin in plasticity, learning, and disease."
Stanford Neurosurgeon Receives Prestigious NREF Award
Dr. Thoms J. Wilson was awarded the 2019-2020 Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation Medtronic Young Clinician Investigator Award to support a project entitled "Deep Machine Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks for the Evaluation and Classification of Peripheral Nerve Tumors". Dr. Wilson intends to utilize artificial intelligence techniques to improve the diagnosis, and ultimately the management, of peripheral nerve tumors.
Chief Resident Wins Neurological Society Scholarship
Chief resident, Dr. Laura Prolo, was awarded the San Francisco Neurological Society's 2019 Michael Edwards Scholarship Award. This is the second year in a row that the SFNS has recognized Dr. Prolo's work with an award, in 2018 Dr. Prolo received the Society's Edwin Boldrey Award.
Stanford Resident Awarded AANS 2019 Abstract Award
Stanford Resident, Dr. Michael Zhang, was awarded the American Association of Neurological Surgeons' 2019 Stewart B. Dunsker, MD Award, which recognizes the most compelling spinal clinical research project presented to the Annual Scientific Committee. Of thousands of submissions, Dr. Zhang's abstract was recognized for its distinguished contribution to the field of study.
Dr. Odette Harris Receives National Medical Fellowship Award
As part of a national ceremony, Dr. Odette Harris received the National Medical Fellowships, Inc. (NMF) Excellence in Academic Medicine Award. The NMF's mission is to increase the number of underrepresented minority physicians and other professional in the healthcare workforce in order to improve access to quality healthcare in medically underserved communities. The Champions of Health Awards honor individuals who have made a lasting impact on healthcare and diversity in healthcare.
Neurosurgery Post Doc Receives 2019 Interdisciplinary Scholar Award
Neurosurgery post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Miguel Garcia, has won the 2019 Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Interdisciplinary Scholar Award for his project "Forces Driving Myelin Wrapping in Oligodendrocytes."
Stanford Neurosurgeons Elected to Leadership Positions of AASAN
Stanford Neurosurgeon, Harminder Singh, MD, was elected President of the American Association of South Asian Neurosurgeons (AASAN), an organization dedicated to empowering South Asian neurosurgeons with education and resources. Stanford Neurosurgeon, Anand Veeravagu, MD, was elected an AASAN Member-At-Large and Co-Chair of the AASAN Education Committee.
Stanford Neurosurgeon Named to Ebony Magazine's Power 100 List
Stanford Professor of Neurosurgery, Dr. Odette Harris, was named to Ebony Magazine's 2018 Ebony Power 100 list. The list honors "those who have over the past year created, led and defied barriers in their representations of Black Excellence."
Professor of Neurosurgery Appointed to Aspen Institute Fellowship
Professor of Neurosurgery, Dr. Odette Harris, has been selected to join the Aspen Institute's Health Innovators Fellowship Class of 2018. The Fellowship selects a distinguished group of healthcare leaders committed to developing new approaches to improve the health and well-being of Americans.
Professor of Neurosurgery Receives Stanford School of Medicine Outstanding Honor
Theo Palmer, PhD, professor of neurosurgery, received the 2018 Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Service. This award recognizes faculty who make distinguished contributions towards enhancing the quality of training and the experiences of graduate students in the biosciences at Stanford.
Stanford Researcher Receives Prestigious McKnight Foundation Award
Stanford Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Brad Zuchero, PhD, received the 2018 McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Scholar Award. The Award is given to young scientists whose work has significant clinical implications.

Stanford neurosurgeon, Dr. Melanie Hayden Gephart, will receive UC San Diego's 2018 40 Under 40 Healer Award, a recognition given to outstanding alumni who have brought honor and distinction to the university.

National MS Society Awards Stanford Researcher Prestigious Scholar Award
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has awarded Brad Zuchero, PhD, the prestigious Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholar Award. The Award will fund 5 years of work focused on improving our understanding of the role actin cytoskeleton plays in controling myelination and remyelination.
Neurosurgery Residents Awarded Joint Section's Travel Fellowship
PGY-6 Resident, Dr. Laura Prolo, and PGY-5 Resident, Dr. Derek Yecies, received this year's Resident Traveling Fellowship from the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery. The Fellowship is only awarded to two candidates each year, and this year the top two candidates were both from Stanford Neurosurgery's Resident Program! Dr. Prolo will complete her Fellowship in Texas, and Dr. Yecies, will travel to New York for his, in 2018.
Stanford Resident Receives Prestigious AANS/CNS Joint Section Award
Stanford Resident, Dr. Derek Yecies, was Awarded the prestigious AANS/CNS Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery's Shulman Award. The Award is given each year for the best paper presented by a resident-in-training at the Joint Section's annual meeting. In addition, Dr. Yecies was presented a 2017 CNS Abstract Award at the CNS Annual Meeting.
Stanford Neurosurgery Department Now Claims An Impressive Three Van Wagenen Fellows
Few institutions can claim that one of their neurosurgeons is a William P. Van Wagenen Fellow; at Stanford we have three! Stanford neurosurgery resident, Dr. Kai Miller, is the winner of the 2018 fellowship and will be traveling to The Netherlands for his research. Stanford neurosurgeons, Drs. Samuel Cheshier, and Odette A. Harris, are also Fellowship awardees, having completed their fellowships in Sweden and Jamaica, respectively.

Meet the 2017 Endocrine Society Laureate Award Winners
Congratulations to Dr. Katznelson, Professor of Neurosurgery and Medicine (Endocrinology) at the Stanford University Medical Center, Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital and the Palo Alto Veteran's Affairs Health Care System. Dr. Katznelson was selected by the Endoncrine Society for their 2017 Outstanding Educator Award which recognizes exceptional achievement as an educator in the discipline of endocrinology and metabolism.
Dr. Gary K. Steinberg Receives 2016 Stroke Journal Progress & Innovation Award
Dr. Gary K. Steinberg, was one of three recipients of the 2016 Stroke Progress and Innovation Award. The Award was given for a paper on the findings of the first clinical trial for stroke patients in North America using intracerebral transplanation of stem cells.
Gary K. Steinberg, PhD '79, MD '80 receives the J.E. Wallace Sterling Lifetime Achievement Award in Medicine
This honor was first conferred by the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association in 1983. The award is named for the former Stanford University president who, in 1953, recommended that the Stanford Medical School be moved from San Francisco to join the main education and research Stanford campus in Palo Alto.
Dr. Steinberg's extraordinary advances impacting medical science and education in the realms of neurosurgery, experimental research investigation, and long-term dedication to chairing the Department of Neurosurgerymake him a most deserving recipient of this award.
