June 17 2021 — Presence for Racial Justice in Healthcare
Racial disparities observed during the COVID-19 pandemic have drawn renewed attention to health-care inequities in the United States and around the world. Since its inception, the Presence Center at Stanford Medicine has made addressing racial justice in health care a priority.
Attendees joined Drs. Abraham Verghese, Hannah Valantine, and other distinguished leaders to learn about the contributions the Presence Center is making to deepen clinician-patient relationships within diverse populations, address racial biases and racism in clinical care, and develop partnerships with historically Black universities and colleges and clinics serving predominantly Black patients.

June 20 2019 — Presence Showcases 2019 Seed Grant Awardees for AI in Medicine: Inclusion & Equity
The Presence Center’s AI in Medicine: Inclusion & Equity Initiative (AiMIE) has just announced its seed grant awardees for 2019. The program’s goal is to “explore solutions, frameworks, and concepts to address the challenges raised at the symposium relating to the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and associated technologies, processes, and policies to address inclusion and equity in medicine and healthcare.” Eight grants were awarded on June 20 at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Funding for the grants and conference was made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Pioneer Grants Portfolio.

The Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: Inclusion and Equity (AiMIE) Symposium recognizes the potential unintended consequences of AI in medicine and seeks to prevent the possible exacerbation of inequity and exclusion.
