Technology Development and Clinical Innovation: Clearing the Bar

The Department of Radiology at Stanford University is widely recognized as a beacon of excellence in scientific discovery and technology development to advance diagnosis, treatment planning, and image-guided interventions. However, the invention and availability of new technology are insufficient to enable innovation alone. A critical element of innovation enabled by new technologies is adoption into clinical practice, which involves overcoming organizational and market barriers that might counter the forces driving the innovation. Reflecting on his efforts in technology development over 22 years at Stanford Radiology, followed by 14 years at Duke and the University of Arizona, the presenter will explore the impact of technology development toward achieving clinical innovation, emphasizing failed assumptions and lessons learned.

Session Learning Objectives

  1. Describe how technology development enables clinical innovation.
  2. Identify the challenges and enablers of adoption as a necessary component of clinical innovation.
  3. Evaluate examples of successful and failed clinical innovation
