I am delighted to announce the appointment of Garry Gold, MD, Professor of Radiology, as the Chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Radiology. Dr. Gold has served as interim chair of the department since July 2020, and his first day as chair will be April 16.

Since joining the Stanford School of Medicine faculty in 2000, Dr. Gold has distinguished himself as clinician, researcher, and educator. He is one of the nation’s foremost radiologists, recognized as an expert in osteoarthritis and translational MRI development. In his two years as interim chair and the preceding three years as vice chair, he has shown exceptional leadership and the vision to further elevate our Department of Radiology.

A patient-oriented researcher with a unique background in electrical engineering and radiology, Dr. Gold focuses on the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to musculoskeletal problems. This includes studying rapid MRI for osteoarthritis as well as real-time imaging and short echo time imaging techniques. His innovative research has produced 10 patents and more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.

Further, Dr. Gold has proven himself a dedicated mentor and visionary leader. An award-winning teacher, he has successfully guided many clinically-oriented researchers within the Department of Radiology. Dr. Gold also has served as director of Stanford’s Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics Center (PHIND) since July 2020 and as co-director of the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, the university-wide research initiative studying the science of peak performance, since July 2021.

Beyond Stanford, Dr. Gold has held a number of national leadership roles, including as chair of the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Translation and Imaging Study Section, and professional publication editorial boards, including as deputy editor of the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Additionally, he is past president of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the Society for Computer Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (now called the Society for Advanced Body Imaging).

I want to thank the search committee – led by Andra Blomkalns, MD, and Thomas Montine, MD, PhD – for conducting a thorough search to identify the next chair of our Department of Radiology.
