Mark Cullen, MD, Professor of Medicine (Primary Care and Population Health), has been appointed to serve as senior associate vice provost for the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research.

This new role is for a three-year term and will be in addition to his current role as senior associate dean for research in the School of Medicine.

Dr. Cullen has held numerous leadership positions at Stanford Medicine, including director of the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences and, from 2009 to 2015, chief of Division of General Medical Disciplines.

In his new role, Dr. Cullen will conduct reviews of research policy, oversee human subjects and animal research, and lead special projects as necessary. Among his first priorities is working with the directors of the independent labs, centers, and institutes to develop a shared vision for the future. This includes addressing opportunities for greater collaboration and communication across campus, identifying synergies between the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and the University's Long-Range Plan, and determining the most beneficial financial construct moving forward.

Dr. Cullen received his A.B. from Harvard College and his M.D. from Yale University and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. Before accepting a position at Stanford Medicine, he was a professor of Medicine and Public Health at Yale University.
