We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Yasmin Owusu, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, as the School of Medicine’s Assistant Dean for Academic Advising.

Dr. Owusu received her bachelor’s degree from Stanford and her MD degree from the Baylor College of Medicine. She completed residency training in adult psychiatry and fellowship training in child/adolescent psychiatry at Stanford. She has been on the Stanford faculty since August 2015.

Dr. Owusu is the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including the School of Medicine’s Award for Excellence in Promotion of Humanism in 2017. She has also been a graduation speaker for the Klingenstein Fellowship at Stanford.

Dr. Owusu has been very involved in medical education at Stanford, holding leadership positions in medical education, diversity, and wellness. She is currently the director of pre-clerkship medical student education in psychiatry, and the course director for the psychiatry threads within the Practice of Medicine, Pharmacology, and Clinical Reasoning courses. In addition, Dr. Owusu serves on the Psychiatry Diversity and Inclusion Wellness Committee and is immediate past faculty advisor to the Student National Medical Association. She has published on the psychiatric care of immigrant youth.  

Dr. Owusu’s appointment acknowledges her experience and expertise in medical education and her dedication and contributions to mentoring, diversity, and wellness at the School of Medicine. Among Dr. Owusu’s responsibilities will be advising and mentoring 25 percent of the medical school class and assisting with authorship of the Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE) and the residency match.
