Postdoctoral Fellow, Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE)

The Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE) announces a clinical ethics fellowship position. 

The Clinical Ethics Fellowship in the Center for Biomedical Ethics is a two-year, full-time program designed to prepare graduates to become leaders in Bioethics in health care settings, academic institutions, and professional or government agencies. Established in 2015, this non-ACGME fellowship is committed to addressing ethical concerns through clinical ethics consultation, policy development, education, and research. This fellowship will be appointed through the Stanford Graduate Medical Education (GME) office.

The goals and objectives of this fellowship include the following:

• Develop proficiency or expertise in clinical ethics consultation. Fellows are expected to develop the capacity to play the role of lead consultant by the end of the second year.

• Comprehensive knowledge of key bioethics topics, including skills in critically evaluating empirical and conceptual research in bioethics

• Experience in presenting, teaching, and discussing core concepts in clinically grounded bioethics at a post-graduate level.

• Develop the ability to take leadership roles in Clinical Ethics Committee Meetings.

• Acquisition of professional skills for academic achievement in the field of bioethics, including research, CV development, and career building (fellows will be prepared to take a faculty position in the field of bioethics in both hospital and academic settings).

• Obtain skills to conduct scholarly research related to clinical ethics and bioethics in both independent and highly collaborative research settings.

We seek applicants with the following prerequisite training and knowledge:

• An advanced degree in an academic or professional discipline with preference given to candidates with terminal degrees in bioethics, philosophy, medicine, behavioral sciences, law, social sciences nursing, social work, religious studies, and other fields related to the practice of clinical and academic bioethics.

• Exceptional candidates with a PhD in Philosophy are highly encouraged. Candidates are also expected to possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, excellent oral and written communication skills, conflict resolution, organizational skills, as well as presentation and teaching skills.

The Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE) in the Stanford University School of Medicine, seeks a new Director. The successful candidate will be a recognized leader in the Bioethics community with a deep understanding of healthcare and biomedicine's ethical, legal, and social aspects. The successful candidate will maintain the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics’ premier status by advancing its mission to provide comprehensive humanistic and social scientific instruction to learners, to conduct novel and meaningful research, and to offer consultation and service in bioethics as it relates to human, animal, and environmental health.

The major criterion for the Center Director position is appointment in the University Medical Line (UML), University Tenure Line (UTL), or Non-Tenure Lines (NTLR/NTLT), and evidence of high performance as a leader, researcher, and consultant in bioethics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree(s); substantial background and experience in administrative leadership, research, and teaching, including training programs for the full continuum of bioethics learners; and a strong academic background. 

They will be responsible for the supervision and development of clinical services, education, and research activities for members of the Center across Stanford University, the Stanford School of Medicine, the Stanford Health Care system, including Stanford Hospital, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCHS), and their partner sites.  The Director will oversee the center's operations, including research, education, and policy development. The SCBE Director provides leadership and oversight for healthcare ethics consultation, policy development, organizational ethics quality activities, and ethics education.

The start date is negotiable, but it would be desirable for the successful candidate to start by late Summer 2023. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated track record of scholarship and the promise to continue conductinghigh-quality research.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct and support innovative empirical bioethics research in the core areas of genomics, end-of-life care, cultural diversity, neuroscience, the changing healthcare marketplace, and technology development

• Provide leadership in bioethics education for students and faculty in medicine, the Humanities and Sciences, and the professional schools, at Stanford University and nationally

• Serve as co-chair or core member of the Stanford Hospital Ethics Committee and Lucile Packard Ethics Committee by providing guidance and leadership to the committee pertaining to healthcare ethics consultation, preventive ethics, policy formulation and providing continuing professional ethics education to committee members.

• Apply ethical reasoning to moral issues in medicine, including basic science, translational biomedical research, patient care, and the development of medical technology

• Contribute to national and international policy discussions to formulate effective responses to contemporary bioethical issues

• Advance and preserve a compassionate and humanistic perspective on the practice of medicine, in order to improve health care for adults and children

Ethical Considerations with Healthcare AI Fellowship

The Anesthesia Department at Stanford Healthcare is recruiting a 2-year fellow for analyzing the ethical and regulatory challenges in evaluating artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) tools before they are deployed at Stanford Healthcare. The fellow will work closely with Drs. Danton Char, Nigam Shah, and Michelle Mello to both evaluate proposed AI/ML deployments into clinical care and to develop an approach for rapid systematic evaluation of AI/ML tools for ethical considerations. In addition, the fellow will conduct research on ethical and regulatory implications arising from the use of AI/ML in clinical healthcare. The position is a Hybrid role with some in-person and some remote flexibility depending on project demands.

This fellowship position is jointly set up between the Stanford Departments of Anesthesia and Medicine (Biomedical Informatics). The Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University seeks an Academic Scholar with a record indicating scholarly activity in any areas related to Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues in Genetics, Genomics, or Precision Medicine to join the Department as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the Non-tenure Line (Research) faculty line. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) at the time of appointment.

The major criterion for appointment for faculty in the Non-tenure Line (Research) is evidence of high-level performance as a researcher for whose special knowledge a programmatic need exists. Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank.
