Lye-Yeng Wong, M.D., a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Stanford Thoracic Surgery Clinical Research Program & Lab, achieved a significant milestone by presenting at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts. This marked her eighth conference presentation in 2023, highlighting her dedication to advancing the field of surgery.

The ACS Clinical Congress is a renowned event that covers a wide range of clinical and non-clinical topics. It includes Named Lectures by leading experts, over 120 Panel Sessions, Special Sessions addressing important subjects, and Postgraduate Didactic and Surgical Skills Courses.

Dr. Wong's presentation at the congress contributed to the Scientific Forum, where late-breaking scientific advances and surgical research were showcased. Attendees also benefited from Video-Based Education sessions, Meet-the-Expert Sessions, and Town Hall Meetings, promoting informal learning and networking.

Dr. Wong’s presentation was titled: Outcomes of Surgery for Catastrophic Hiatal Hernia (HH) Presentations.  The aim of their research was to examine outcomes of patients who underwent emergency gastrectomy or esophagectomy for HH with gangrene or obstruction using the NSQIP database.  The conclusion of Dr. Wong's presentation and research revealed a crucial finding: patients requiring emergent gastric or esophageal resection for strangulated hiatal hernia face exceptionally high morbidity and mortality rates, even in the modern era. This data has significant implications for both patients and surgeons, serving as valuable information when considering the potential risks and consequences of not electively repairing a hiatal hernia.

Dr. Lye-Yeng Wong's commitment to advancing cardiothoracic surgery through research and presentations at prestigious conferences like ACS Clinical Congress reflects her dedication to the field. Her contributions will undoubtedly continue to drive progress in the years ahead.

The ACS will host the Clinical Congress 2024 in San Francisco CA, Oct 19-22, 2024.
