Department welcomes new transplant clinical instructors,
Drs. Carol Chen and Mike Paulsen

The Stanford Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is pleased to welcome Carol Chen, MD, and Michael Paulsen, MD, to the department as Transplant Clinical Instructors. In their roles, they will provide patient care in mechanical circulatory support device insertion and heart, heart-lung, and lung transplant procedures.

Dr. Carol Chen comes to Stanford from CarolinaEast Health System in North Carolina, where she held the position of cardiothoracic vascular surgeon. She attended medical school at Washington University School of Medicine and trained in general surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. While at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Chen completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Harrison Department of Surgical Research and obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology. She continued training here at Stanford as a cardiothoracic surgery fellow. Dr. Chen will provide attending coverage at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and other Stanford-affiliated programs.

Dr. Michael Paulsen recently completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the Stanford Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in June 2023. He was also a postdoctoral research fellow during his residency here at Stanford. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.
