Engaging in Mentoring Conversations about Culture and Identity

Research shows that most trainees from historically marginalized communities in STEMM fields want to discuss issues related to culture and identity in their mentoring relationships, because these issues can deeply impact their careers. Yet faculty mentors might feel uncertain about how to effectively engage in these types of conversations due to the many common pitfalls in these circumstances.

This interactive workshop is designed to help faculty respectfully broach and engage in conversations about culture and identity with their trainees, so that they leave with specific plans to implement in their mentoring and to enhance the inclusive climate of their research groups. Furthermore, faculty participants will have opportunities to share their personal experiences, challenges, and promising practices, as they also learn from the perspectives of student mentees from historically marginalized communities.

The interventions and framework of this workshop have been developed from research and evidence-based strategies with CIMER (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research) https://cimerproject.org/, in collaboration with Stanford faculty.
