The Stanford Medicine 6th Annual Diversity & Inclusion Forum, a Continuing Medical Education conference sponsored by the Office of Diversity in Medical Education, will highlight innovative workshops developed by residents and fellows across Stanford GME programs, with their educational mentors, who have participated in the 2022-2023 cohort of the Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity (LEAD) Program. The Diversity & Inclusion Forum will be an enriching opportunity for faculty, trainees, students, postdocs, staff and community members to learn tools and strategies to enable them to become an effective agent for change in diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education.

Anti-racism, White Privilege, and Allyship in Medicine

While the fight against racism is centuries-old, the murder of George Floyd in March 2020 sparked a global uprising against anti-Black police brutality, bringing conversations about racism front and center in many contexts where these conversations have not previously taken place. For some, this is a new conversation, but it is a critical conversation for all of us, especially in the context of medicine and medical education. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 7 in 10 African Americans believe they are treated unfairly when seeking medical care. In this workshop, we seek to clarify what white privilege and anti-racism look like in our daily lives, as well as describe the role of intersectionality in understanding oppression. We will focus particularly on these concepts in the context of medicine and medical education. Participants will have a chance to think about how they can work for positive change within their own departments and programs.

Intersectionality in recognition that now more than ever, it is imperative to prioritize an inclusive and equitable community for intersectional LGBTQ+ groups.

The featured keynote speaker will be Jonathan Lassiter, PhD, co-editor of Black LGBT Health in the United States: The Intersection of Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation. Dr. Lassiter and a panel of featured Stanford community members will share both personal and professional experiences related to this theme. The audience will have an opportunity to interact with the speakers through a live Q&A and polling.

Navigating racial bias — An evening with Professor Jennifer Eberhardt

The Stanford Undergraduate Neuroscience Society has the pleasure of welcoming Professor Jennifer Eberhardt to discuss her work in navigating racial bias within different spheres in addition to deriving future steps from this knowledge. Professor Eberhardt has been a pioneer in the field of social psychology. Her work anchors in criminal justice and extends to startling images of racial imagery and discrimination. In addition to being on Oprah (watch here), Dr. Eberhardt's TED Talk here has shown millions of people about racial bias and ways to disrupt it.

In August 2019 the New York Times published the 1619 Project, an examination of how slavery shaped and continues to influence the course of US history. New York Times correspondent Nikole Hannah-Jones created the project, and writer Kiese Laymon contributed a short story to it.

First-ever Inclusion 2020 Week set for Jan. 27-30

The campus community is invited to join the Diversity and Inclusion Council for four days of events aiming to celebrate, support and nurture diversity and inclusion both at Stanford and in the communities we serve. Highlights will include an introduction by Department Chair Bob Harrington, a series of Grand Rounds speakers, social gatherings and mixers, informative poster presentations and breakout sessions for smaller conversation.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn through meaningful discussion on pressing topics such as implicit bias, a culture of feedback, stigmatizing language, mentorship, self-care during difficult times and more.

Stanford Medicine is walking within the San Francisco PRIDE parade this coming June 30^th, 2019!

The idea stemmed from efforts to promote LGBTQ+ Visibility within Stanford Medicine's network, and efforts have been combined with Stanford's PRIDE Organization in order to make this an all-inclusive, campus-wide event. If you would like to be included in this event, please fill out this quick sign-up form in order to quantify the number of individuals whom:

Are interested in helping to volunteer and coordinate people before/during the event
Are interested in attending the event
Are associated with a specific department
Belong to a specific Stanford constituency (staff, undergraduate, grad, MD, etc.)

In addition to identifying those interested in attending the event, this initial survey will help organize participants into groups that they would most likely want to walk with.
